Teaching

While I do not currently conduct assessments I can advise on where & who to go to.
Another area of my expertise is in visual anomalies which may contribute to/exacerbate cognitive processing and learning.  I am able to offer a simple visual screening to evaluate whether there may be issues which could benefit from referral to a Behavioural Optometrist for a full assessment. If you have concerns about visual skills please do let me know as I can refer you to appropriate practitioners.

I worked within this field for 8 years as a Vision Therapist.

I now provide support which is tailored to the needs of the student; making use of games to revise/consolidate spelling rules.  I have been working in this field for 20+ years.

Teaching sessions can be 45 or 60 minutes in duration.

I teach Mondays - Thursday inclusive. Lessons on Saturday are by arrangement only.

CogMed

This is an internet based programme developed to improve working memory. Currently it is the
only intervention we have to offer. A course of training takes 25 days - depending on age the sessions can vary from 15 - 40 minutes per day.  After completion of the training there is the option to purchase a maintenance which allows access for 15 minute 'top-ups' as required.. It is a sensitive programme which responds to the progress the individual makes, but will always seek to help you improve.

Biodymanic massage listens to your body's reponse to treatment and directs attention to areas of need.

This is a therapeutic type of massage often available within the framework of a ‘talking’ therapy. As a 'client driven' massage it is individualised - tailored to your needs - at that moment.

It was introduced in the UK by Gerda Boyesen, in the 1960s. She was a Scandinavian physiotherapist who went on to develop this massage in response to her experience when treating clients. As this developed she drew upon the teaching of others who offered insights in to how the body responds to life and how to ameliorate these effects. Those she drew upon include Bulow-Hansen, Ola Raknes who also had links with Wilhelm Reich.

Biodynamic massage is useful for numerous issues including :

depression
M.E.
Fibromyalgia

anxiety

feeling out of balance

long term chronic conditions

For each massage session you may/may not need to remove some clothing - this is negotiable, you will not be made to feel uncomfortable at any point. It is often more pleasant to remove clothing for this as clothing can interfere with the massage. The room is warm enough for you to feel comfortable when your body is being treated. You are covered by a sheet and blanket for most of the time unless the arm/back is being worked on. No oils are used. Within the 60 minute session 5 minutes is included for a chat before and also 5/10 minutes at the end to recover and have a glass of water to hydrate your system.

Craniosacral Therapy is an extremely gentle form of therapeutic treatment which has it roots in Osteopathy.

Where Cranio-Sacral Therapy differs from the Osteopathic focus on the physiological alignment is that Cranio-Sacral treatment seeks a deeper level of integration as it recognises the link between the body and the mind.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy was developed by Dr. John Upledger, an osteopath, in the 1970s based on an approach developed by Dr. William Sutherland, an osteopath in the early 1900's.
The craniosacral system ( cranio means head and sacral refers to the area at the base of the spine) including the brain and spinal cord are bathed in a cranio-sacral fluid  ( cerebro-spinal  fluid) which has a rhythmic pulse, similar to blood pressure. Craniosacral therapy (CST) uses the light touch of the therapist to encourage the body to heal itself.

This therapy is becoming increasingly popular and useful alongside dental/orthodontic treatment; allowingand supporting the body to integrate the changes being made to their bite as treatment progresses or to help ameliorate post treatment tension in the jaw. As I now work alongside an Holistic Dentist ( one day per week) this area of the jaw is of special interest to me.  Also a family member has been seriously affected by jaw problems and is still undergoing treatment including CranioSacral treatment at every appointment to maintain the integrity of the system.

Cranio-sacral therapy is based around the gentle and natural motion of fluids which surround the brain and spine, but which influence the whole body. It is a non-invasive therapy, there is no manipulation and massage, and only very gentle pressure applied to the body.
A craniosacral therapist will pick up rhythmic movements throughout the body – although thismotion is subtle - it is barely measurable - a trained therapist can use it to facilitate a deep healing process.

What does a session involve?
Apart from removing shoes, belt and anything else which might cause you discomfort when lying down no further preparation is required. If there is limited movement due to an injury or chronic problem, treatment can be given with the client sitting. 10+ minutes is included within the hour session for a preliminary chat ( longer at the first treatment) and recovery at the end of the session along with a glass of water to hydrate the body.

Craniosacral therapy is useful for

babies - colic, poor sleeping, poor feeding

anxiety
TMJ problems - teeth grinding
headaches
migraine

a sense of something wrong although the doctor can find nothing
digestive issues
long term chronic conditions
depression
stress

Cranio-Sacral Therapy is not intended as primary healthcare but to work alongside the relationship you have with your doctor. Registered therapists are accredited by the Cranio-Sacral Therapy Association (CSTA) and use the letters RCST after their names.
